THE EMOTIONAL STATES OF AMERICA, 2017
Since the onset of the internet, our access to information has gone from a simple containable trickle to an unruly river. News reaches us with unprecedented immediacy, yet our understanding of the world is blurred.
This continuous barrage of information has taken away the space required for critical thought. This coupled with the fact that now everyone has an opinion, a comment or an attack that they send via the click of a button and behind anonymity. We are constantly provoked, threatened, and overloaded, and because we have no pause, we are in a constant emotional state, a visceral place that pulls from the gut, and often without rationalization.
The artists in the Emotional States of America attempt to carve out a space for contemplation, remind us how we got here, and give us space to delve into our current moment.
